The Confidence to Enjoy the Ride
While we were in Berlin recently, we took a riverboat cruise through the city on an absolutely beautiful day. The sunshine, gentle breeze, and spectacular views made it the perfect afternoon to enjoy the sights along the Spree River. Berlin is a fascinating blend of history and modern life, a city once divided by a wall that has emerged as a vibrant global destination. From the water, the historic landmarks, impressive architecture, and lively riverbanks offered a wonderful view of a city that has experienced so much change.
And somewhere between taking pictures, admiring the scenery, and enjoying the beautiful weather, I started thinking about leadership.

Now, who goes on a riverboat cruise in Berlin and starts thinking about leadership? Apparently, I do! Yes, I do! Remember, I told you I'm always asking questions.
Anyway, as we traveled along the river, passing beneath bridges and watching other boats come and go, I noticed how relaxed we all were. (If you're ever in Germany, visit Berlin). People were talking, laughing, taking pictures, and enjoying the experience, while somebody else was responsible for making sure we got where we were going.

I didn't know a thing about navigating that river, and I wasn't trying to learn that afternoon either! I was perfectly happy letting the captain handle that part while I enjoyed Berlin.
But it occurred to me that leadership works much the same way. There is a certain peace that comes with knowing someone capable is paying attention, making good decisions, and taking responsibility for getting everyone safely to their destination.
When you have confidence in someone's leadership, you don't spend the entire journey worrying about what might go wrong. You have the freedom to enjoy where you are because you trust the person responsible for where you're going.
Looking back on that beautiful afternoon in Berlin, I doubt most of us gave the captain much thought. We were too busy enjoying the sunshine, the scenery, the conversations, and the experience itself. And when you think about it, that's quite a compliment to the person navigating the boat.
Sometimes we don't fully appreciate good leadership because we're enjoying the benefits of it without having to think about everything it takes to make things work.
So here's my thought over coffee today. Enjoy the journey, appreciate the people who make it possible, and celebrate good leaders. Their preparation, sound judgment, and steady leadership often give the rest of us the confidence to relax and enjoy the ride.
And remember, just because nobody is asking who's steering the boat doesn't mean nobody appreciates the captain.
Now, enjoy your coffee!
