What A decade means

What a decade means...

I'm in Dallas, TX this week on a business assignment with some time added for friends. I am blessed to have friends who are family to me, and I cherish this gift more as I get older and wiser.

While away from home, I'm thinking more deeply about what a decade means. 2026 marks a decade of hosting my radio show and leading a community-based adult reentry program. Ten years. Just like that.

When I was ten years old, a decade meant maybe one day I would get a bicycle of my own and that I could watch my favorite cartoons whenever I wanted.

At 20, it meant I was going to soon graduate with a degree in Journalism and enter the military as a commissioned officer.

At 30, it meant I'd learned some things and was in the season of growth and challenge like I never could have imagined. And that was not a bad thing.

At 40, I was excited. Four decades, but a different perspective of time and lessons. I looked at time differently, and with more respect.

At this stage in my life, closer to the three score and ten, serving a decade means more than staying in one place for ten years. For me, a decade has meant serving in two spaces that may seem different on the surface but are deeply connected at the core: radio and reentry. They're both rooted in conversations that can affect how people think, live, and navigate life.

For ten years, I have sat behind a microphone as host of Conversations with Daisy Jones, speaking into the lives of people I may never meet but who have trusted me with their time, attention, and hearts. Week after week, radio has taught me the power of words, timing, and presence. It has shown me that thoughtful conversations can shift perspective, bring comfort, spark growth, and help people feel less alone. It has done that for me.

At the same time, serving as Executive Director of the Liberty County Re-Entry Coalition and the SOAR Reentry Center has shifted my paradigm about service and impact. That both can happen when conversations draw people together to help other people.

A decade of serving in radio and reentry has taught me that purpose outlasts performance.

And when you look back after ten years, the greatest reward is not simply that you lasted. It is knowing that your presence made a difference.

A decade of living well is the ultimate gift. So, whatever you're doing right now just remember that time is a gift. Health and wellness are gifts. Serving others is a gift to everyone including you.

Having conversations is priceless. So, whatever you're doing just remember that our words are powerful. As technology evolves more and more everyday, it's easy to lean more on it as a convenience, but there is nothing more powerful than human connection through conversations.

A decade has taught us alot. Let's head into the next one with joy, purpose, and love.
