Where Real Talk Still Lives

Real talk is alive and well

Not every conversation has to be deep to be meaningful. Some are quick exchanges that barely last a minute — a smile, a “how’s your day?” "Where are you headed to?" — but even those words matter. They build connection. They remind us we’re still human, and there's a lot of research behind what we already know. I know having conversations nurtures my brain and heart.
I’ve learned this truth over time: no meaningful words are ever disregarded. God has a way of letting the right words land where they’re meant to. Sometimes it’s the conversation you didn’t plan that ends up making your day, putting a smile on your face, reminding you of just how blessed you are, or sounding an internal lesson.
We weren’t created to live in permanent silence. Yes, silence is golden — it’s sacred, healing, and necessary — but silence alone can’t carry all of life. We need both silence and conversation. Reflection and expression. Listening and being heard.
That’s why I love Conversations with Daisy Jones. Week after week, real talk still lives here. Every conversation is rich because we start with that intention. What if every time we opened our mouths we start with rich intention? Something for each of us of to think about.
You know the phrase “real talk” has taken a beating lately. Unfortunately, some people use it like a weapon, as if they’re the only ones speaking truth. It’s been turned into a hashtag for bashing, for being “brutally honest” without compassion, for dividing instead of understanding. It is often used by arrogant people as a precursor for speaking out of their pride.
But real talk — the kind that heals, unites, and reveals — isn’t about volume. It’s about value. It’s about truth that carries love. It’s the kind that can be both gentle and firm, raw and wise, transparent yet flowing out of love. That’s the kind of conversation I want to keep having.
Because everyone talking isn’t always authentic, and that’s okay. Discernment teaches us to listen differently. We have to seek out honest, truthful, Spirit-led voices — the ones that bring light, not confusion. And since it’s exhausting trying to figure out who’s real and who’s not, I’m always leaning into the Holy Spirit to do that for me. He knows every heart, every motive, and every word before it’s spoken.
Here’s the truth
When we stop talking, we start drifting apart. We stop connecting. When we stop listening, we start assuming and having 'thought-talk' that can lead us down roads that further divide us. And when we stop connecting, we start losing parts of ourselves and relationships that are life-giving. So let’s stay open. Let’s stay discerning. Let’s stay connected to what’s real.
So Here’s My Challenge Family
This week, find one person you haven’t really heard in a while. Ask a simple question — “How are you, really?” Then stop. Listen. That’s where connection happens.
And that’s why we’ll keep talking — on the airwaves, in print, and around the table — because I truly believe that in these days of ever-evolving technology, a conversation is still the most powerful form of communication on the planet.
